Academics Overview

The academic experience at KCS is both personal and rigorous. It is a combination of onsite and virtual instruction, giving students expansive, personal access to their teachers, while simultaneously affording them flexibility in the shape and form of each day’s schedule.

• The Advanced Placement curricula serves as the core of the KCS academic program. Taught asynchronously with KCS-hired master teachers, KCS students have the ability to work with classmates from across the country, while enjoying regular and direct personal access to their teachers for help and support.

• Through the blended model that lies at the heart to the KCS experience, students engage and own their academic development more fully and completely than in the traditional 19th century education model. Students take ownership of their learning by, on a daily basis, assessing where they feel they need support and where they feel their strengths lie. This leads to the development of a full and comprehensive awareness of themselves as thinkers and learners. Known as “meta-cognition”, this academic self-awareness is perhaps one of the most important tools a student can develop prior to entering college.

• Additionally, because students must take it upon themselves to organize their academic day and make critical time allocation and prioritization decisions, they develop remarkable time management and task accomplishment and completion skills. While done in concert with their Learning Coach in the younger high school years, by senior year, a KCS student will have a confidence, a focus, an ability to organize and an effectiveness that will serve him or her well in the new environs of any college or university setting.
