
KCS Writing Curriculum
Strong writing is an essential tool for clear thinking and KCS students have the opportunity to strengthen and deepen their writing skills in the Writing Seminar.
• In each grade, KCS students enroll in a one semester Writing Seminar taught by their Learning Coach.
• Each seminar focuses on different genres of writing powered by the student’s voice and interests
• Students develop grammar and editing skills, confidence, and their own authentic voice
Seminar 9: Multi-Genre Paper
Students learn research and writing techniques that they apply to produce an 8-10 page Multi-Genre Research paper on a topic of their choice. In a multi-genre paper students can use many types of writing products to advance their thesis, e.g. news stories, journal entries, essays, comics, brochures, dialogues, and speeches.
Seminar 10: Journalism
Students learn journalistic research and interview techniques which are applied to produce a series of articles on a chosen topic.
Seminar 11: Creative Writing
Students study the various forms of creative writing and create products from at least two of the following genres: poetry, screenplay, short story, one act play.
Seminar 12: Writing to Make a Difference
Students learn research and interview techniques associated with creating oral history and apply these techniques to creating a memoir for a senior citizen in the community.
